Stair handrail on the wall: what you should decide before ordering

A stair railing on the wall should follow the path of those going up and down. It seems like a simple piece, but the position of the supports, changes in direction, and hand space make a difference in daily use.

Before choosing the finish, observe the entire staircase. Is there a landing? Does the wall change direction? Is there a door at the beginning or end of the path? These details should be considered together, rather than just ordering a tube of a certain length.

The wall is part of the solution

The supports must be fixed to a suitable base. A stone-clad wall, a hollow wall, and a solid wall may require different solutions. The visible cladding does not always reveal what is behind it.

Inform the workshop about the wall construction and previous work. If there are drawings or photographs from the construction phase, they can help clarify the fixing points. The choice of anchors should result from this assessment.

Follow the path, including landings

A straight flight is only one of the possible situations. In a staircase with a change of direction, it is good to understand how the handrail follows the landing and where it ends. The meeting between segments must be resolved in the drawing.

Photograph the staircase from bottom to top and from top to bottom. Include the arrival and departure zones. A frontal photograph of some steps may hide important obstacles and interruptions.

Comfort and finish should be experienced

When possible, see a sample of the profile and finish. The feel of a round tube differs from that of other sections. The shine also changes with the lighting and materials of the staircase.

In a frequently used space, ask how cleaning is done and how the area near the wall is accessed. The available span should allow for comfortable use and meet the demands applicable to the project.

Final measurements must be confirmed on site.

Approximate measurements help prepare a first proposal. For manufacturing, it is necessary to confirm the route, slope, and actual assembly conditions. If the staircase is still under construction, indicate the thickness of the planned coverings.

The height, extensions, and remaining conditions must be defined according to the building's use and the applicable project. Avoid copying measurements from a photo of another house without verifying if they are suitable for your situation.

A handrail does not replace a guardrail.

The handrail serves as a support for the hand. When there is an open side and a risk of falling, the protection of the unevenness must be evaluated separately. Adding a tube to the wall does not, by itself, solve the need for a guardrail on the opposite side.
