Laser cutting of metal for prototypes and small series

Before ordering fifty pieces, it may be useful to assemble one. A slightly misplaced hole, a forgotten cable passage, or difficulty accessing the fastener are problems that are easier to correct in the prototype. Laser cutting of metal allows you to study this first piece from the drawing that will then guide production.

This does not replace technical analysis. It helps to transform doubts into concrete checks: does the piece fit, does it leave space for the other components, and can it be assembled in the planned order?

Decide what you want to test

A prototype can serve to confirm the shape, test the assembly, or evaluate the finish. Tell the workshop which of these questions is open. A sample made only to check the contour may not represent the behavior of the final part.

If the test depends on strength, thickness, or alloy, these requirements must be defined. Do not draw conclusions about the final performance from a sample produced in a different material without technical evaluation.

Give a reference to each version

When the design changes, save a new revision and identify the previous one as outdated. Sending multiple files with similar names increases the risk of confusion. The order should clearly indicate which version is to be manufactured.

Mark important changes in a short note. For example, explain that you changed the distance between two holes or added an opening. This information facilitates analysis and comparison with the previous sample.

Test the part in the assembly.

An isolated part may conform to the drawing and not work in the actual assembly. Confirm the connections with the other components, tool access, and assembly order. If there is bending or welding, the test should consider these operations.

Record the result with photographs and measurements. Separate what is a drawing change from what is a matter of execution. This way, the workshop receives clear indications for the next phase.

Moving from prototype to small series.

After validation, close the approved revision and confirm quantity, material, finish, and deadline. Also define how you want to receive the parts: separated by reference, grouped by set, or identified for assembly.

If there are particularly important elevations, highlight them and agree on the verification method. Avoid requesting a very tight tolerance on all dimensions when only a few affect the fit. The workshop can help clarify the feasibility of the request.

What to send for the first analysis

Include the drawing, the number of samples, the material, and the thickness. Explain the application and what you want to test. If you are still preparing the files, consult our article on files for laser cutting.

Lumiinox analyzes single pieces and series in its Laser cutting service. Send the prototype you have in mind and indicate if you plan to produce more units after validation. This perspective helps prepare the work from the beginning.
