Stainless steel tube: round or square for your project?
A stainless steel tube can give rise to a handrail, a furniture structure, or a component for a machine. The shape of the section changes the appearance of the piece, but also the joints, the fixings, and the way the assembly is manufactured.
Choosing between round and square tubing requires more than just visual preference. The external dimension, wall thickness, alloy, and application must be defined. Two tubes with the same apparent width can have different characteristics.
Round tubing follows continuous lines.
Circular sections are common in handrails and in pieces where a smooth line is desired. In changes of direction and connections to other tubes, the preparation of the joints must be considered for the final design.
If the piece will serve as a hand support, comfort and continuity deserve to be discussed in the design. A good design in an image may need adjustments when it is used every day.
Square tubing facilitates a more geometric reading.
Flat faces can help organize connections and support surfaces in furniture structures or metal assemblies. The appearance tends to be more pronounced, especially when the design repeats vertical and horizontal lines.
This does not allow us to conclude that it is always more resistant than a round tube. The answer depends on the complete section, thickness, length, supports, and stresses. In structural pieces, the dimensioning must be done for the intended use.
Indicate the thickness, not just the outside measurement.
When submitting a drawing, distinguish the outside diameter of a round tube from the measurements of the faces of a square or rectangular tube. Add the wall thickness and length of each piece. If you do not know this data, explain the function of the assembly.
In a replacement job, a photograph may not reveal the thickness. The workshop may need to observe the piece or consult existing documentation before proposing a compatible solution.
The application location guides the choice of stainless steel.
An interior element has different exposure than a piece subject to sea air or frequent cleaning products. Identify the environment and indicate the alloy specified by the project, if any.
The finish should also be compatible. A brushed piece next to a polished one may produce a different result than expected. Show the existing elements with which the new work should relate.
Holes and joints must be included in the initial drawing
Mark the position of the holes, the direction of the faces, and the connection points. In an assembly with several similar tubes, a clear reference for each piece reduces doubts during assembly. Also mark the areas that cannot be marked.
Lumiinox performs stainless steel work and tube transformation. To study the execution, send a drawing or sketch of the assembly, with measurements, quantity, and finish. If you are still choosing the section, tell us where and how the piece will be used.
