Laser or TIG Welding: How to Choose for Your Part
A joint can be visible on a piece of furniture, work inside a machine, or be part of a structure exposed to the weather. The choice between laser or TIG welding begins with this function. The appearance of the weld bead matters, but it is not enough to decide on the process.
The material, thickness, joint geometry, and access to the work area must be analyzed together. Only then does it make sense to compare the preparation, execution time, and finish that each solution requires.
What changes between the two processes
In laser welding, energy is concentrated by a beam. TIG welding uses an electric arc with a tungsten electrode and gas shielding. These are different processes, with possibilities and limitations that depend on the workpiece and the equipment.
The TWI describes laser welding as a solution used in various metals and applications where joint quality and deformation control are relevant. This does not mean it is the best choice for every job.
A well-prepared joint makes a difference
Before discussing the finish, it is necessary to understand how the parts arrive at the weld. Gaps, positioning, and edge regularity influence the execution. If the drawing includes parts that fit together, also show the critical measurements of this fit.
A sample can help when the visual result is important. In a set of several units, it is advisable to agree on the acceptance criteria before proceeding with the series. A reference photograph should accompany the specification, without replacing it.
When welding is visible
In furniture and interior joinery, the position of the weld bead and the continuity of the finish deserve consideration in the design. A joint can be discreetly placed in a less visible area or integrate into the expression of the piece.
Explain if you want to keep the weld bead visible, even out the surface, or apply a subsequent finish. The work does not necessarily end with welding. Cleaning, preparation, and protection of the piece during transport may be part of the order.
Stainless steel and aluminium require different information
Indicate the alloy whenever you know it and inform if the material has already been painted, treated, or repaired. For used pieces, send photos of the area to be joined and the complete assembly. Lack of material identification may require additional checks.
In the case of aluminium, the choice of process and filler material depends on the alloy and application. TWI guide on aluminium welding explains some of these differences. It is not prudent to treat all aluminium parts as equivalent.
How to request a useful quote
Send drawing or photographs, material, thickness, quantity and function of the part. Mark the joints, the measurements that need to be controlled and the desired finish. If the project requires specific tests or documentation, this should be in the initial request.
