Hinges for heavy gates: what to evaluate before replacing
A gate that starts touching the ground immediately makes you think about the hinges. Sometimes, the wear and tear is there. In other situations, the origin is a loose fastening, a pillar with problems, or a deformation of the gate leaf itself. Choosing hinges for heavy gates without understanding the cause can leave the problem unsolved.
Before buying parts, record what has changed. Has the gate suddenly become more difficult to close? Does the noise always appear in the same spot? Did the problem start after an impact? A concrete description helps more than just saying you need larger hinges.
Weight is only part of the choice
The width and geometry of the leaf, the position of the supports, and the intended use also matter. The capacities indicated by the manufacturer must be read with the conditions to which they apply. It is not enough to add up the advertised load of several hinges to conclude that the set is adequate.
On a gate with closed filling, wind exposure is another relevant factor. Therefore, send the location and photos of the entire entrance, including the inside. A close-up image of the hardware, isolated from the rest, rarely suffices.
Looking at the support and the leaf
The hinge transmits forces to the structure where it is fixed. A robust piece does not compensate for a degraded support. The assessment should include fixings, joints, pillars, and gate alignment.
Observe without disassembling. Cracks near the supports, deformed hardware, visible gaps, and recent marks on the floor should be shown to the professional. If there is a risk of falling or unexpected movement, keep people away and suspend use until the assessment.
Repair or replace the assembly?
In some cases, the gate leaf can be preserved and the supports corrected. In others, wear or deformation necessitates more extensive work. The decision depends on the actual condition of the parts and the possibility of restoring safe operation.
Ask the proposal to explain the identified origin and what will be addressed. It is helpful to distinguish between hardware replacement, structural repair, and final assembly adjustment. This way you understand what the work resolves and what is outside the budget.
When the gate has automation
Inform the person doing the assessment about the installed motor and any malfunctions that occur. A mechanical alteration may require a new verification of its operation by the installer. Increasing the motor's power to overcome resistance should not be used as a solution to a structural problem.
The equipment manual should guide its use and maintenance. Any intervention involving supporting or removing a heavy gate requires appropriate means and should be carried out by professionals.
What to send to Lumiinox
Combine general photos, images of the hinges and fixing points, approximate measurements, and an explanation of what is happening. If there is documentation for the gate, include the model and material identification.
A Lumiinox performs metal fabrication work and can analyse maintenance and repair requests. Request an evaluation of your gate before choosing replacement parts.
