Laser cutting of sheet metal: how it works and when to choose
For decades, cutting sheet metal accurately was a slow process, dependent on mechanical tools, saws, guillotines, and a lot of finishing work. Each piece required time, each series accumulated small variations, and any more elaborate design required concessions. laser cutting Laser cutting has completely changed this reality and has become the benchmark technology for producing metal parts with precision, speed, and a finish that eliminates the need for retouching in most applications.
At Lumiinox, Laser cutting service for sheet metal is carried out with state-of-the-art industrial fiber equipment, serving companies, professionals and private clients. In this article we explain how the technology works, what materials and thicknesses we work with, in which situations laser is the right choice and how you can request a quote in a few minutes.
How fiber laser cutting works
Fiber laser cutting uses a high-intensity light beam, generated in a set of doped optical fibers and conducted to the cutting head, where it is concentrated at a point with fractions of a millimeter. This concentration of energy melts the metal in a localized way, while an assist gas expels the molten material and leaves the edge clean.
The entire process is controlled by a CNC system. The operator imports the CAD file with the part drawing, defines the material and thickness, and the machine performs the cut automatically, following the contour with an accuracy that no manual process can match. As there is no physical contact with the sheet, there is no tool wear or mechanical stress on the material: the first piece and the thousandth come out exactly the same.
What distinguishes the fiber laser
Compared to older CO2 lasers, the fiber laser consumes less energy, requires less maintenance, and cuts the most common thicknesses in metalworking at higher speeds. It is also more effective on reflective materials such as aluminium and stainless steel, precisely the materials we work with most.

Our equipment: MAQFORT MCL3015OF
To guarantee the best results, Lumiinox works with the fiber laser cutting machine MAQFORT MCL3015OF, a high-performance piece of equipment developed for the precise cutting of different metals and thicknesses.
Main features of our laser cutting:
Maximum cutting area of 1500 × 3000 mm · Thickness up to 18 mm in mild steel · Power of 3 kW · Cutting head with automatic focus · High stability Gantry structure · Automatic sheet detection system · Real-time process monitoring
This set combines a high-quality laser generator, a high-precision cutting head and advanced CNC control, ensuring consistent cuts even on highly complex parts. The automatic focus adjusts the beam to each material and thickness, and real-time monitoring allows you to detect and correct any deviation during the process.
What materials do we cut?
Our laser cutting service covers the most commonly used metals in industry and construction. We work primarily with Stainless steel, a noble material, resistant to corrosion and highly valued in architecture, hospitality and the food industry; Aluminium, lightweight, durable and increasingly present in frames, equipment and furniture; and other metal alloys, evaluated on a case-by-case basis according to the project.
The choice of material influences the cutting speed, the assist gas and the edge finish. Our team guides the client whenever there are doubts about which material and thickness are most suitable for a given application, avoiding unnecessary costs.
When laser cutting is the right choice
There are clear signs that your project requires laser cutting. The first is dimensional accuracy: when the piece has to fit into another, when there are holes and cutouts with exact positions, when the tolerance is measured in tenths of a millimeter. The second is design complexity: curved contours, perforated patterns, letters and logos, geometries that mechanical processes cannot reproduce cleanly.
The third is Repeatability: in mass production, the laser ensures that all parts are identical, without the progressive deviation from tool wear. And the fourth is Finishing: Clean edges with no significant burrs reduce or eliminate subsequent deburring and sanding operations, saving time and money.
Sectors where laser makes a difference
Lumiinox laser cutting is used in Metalworking industry, in the manufacture of technical components and parts; in Construction and architecture, in cladding, railings, panels and decorative elements; in Industrial equipment and machine structures; in Automotive sector and in Agricultural machinery; in Metal furniture and in Decorative projects; and, of course, in Custom parts for private clients who need a tailor-made solution.

From file to piece: how the process works
The process at Lumiinox is designed to be simple for the client. It all starts with sending the technical drawing in DXF, DWG, or PDFformat. Our team validates the geometry, confirms the material and thickness, and prepares the fitting of the parts onto the sheet to make the most of the material.
This is followed by the actual cutting, performed by the MCL3015OF with the parameters adjusted to the material. Finally, the parts are checked and prepared for delivery or for the next steps. If you don't have a technical drawing, that's not an impediment: starting from an idea, a measurement, or a sketch, we develop the drawing with you before moving forward.
What if the part needs to be bent?
Many laser-cut parts then go to bending: boxes, supports, profiles, technical baseboards, equipment components. At Lumiinox, this step takes place in the same workshop, in our Sheet metal bendingservice, with a 30-ton MAQFORT hydraulic press brake with a capacity of up to 1250 mm. The cutting design is already planned anticipating the bends, which eliminates tolerance errors between suppliers and shortens delivery times.
The economic advantages of laser cutting
In addition to technical quality, laser cutting brings concrete economic gains. The first is in material utilization: the automatic fitting of parts onto the sheet, known as nesting, organizes the contours in a way that minimizes waste, which directly impacts the final cost, especially in materials like stainless steel. The second is in reduction of subsequent operations: a clean edge eliminates deburring, an exact hole eliminates drilling on-site, and the right part the first time eliminates corrections.
The third gain is in time. A set of parts that previously took days between layout, mechanical cutting, and finishing now comes off the machine in hours, ready for the next phase. For companies working with tight deadlines, this predictability is worth as much as the price.
How to reduce the cost of your parts
There are design decisions that make cutting more economical without compromising the result. Whenever possible, group pieces in the same order: cutting ten pieces on the same sheet dilutes preparation time and improves utilization. Standardize thicknesses: two pieces of different thicknesses require two sheets and two preparations. Simplify where detail doesn't add value: very small radii and unnecessary cutouts increase cutting time.
And send the right file: a clean, full-scale DXF with closed contours is quoted faster and avoids adjustments. We have prepared a complete guide on this topic in the article on file preparation for laser cutting, available on our blog.
Why choose Lumiinox
The uniform matters, but it's the team that makes the difference. Lumiinox adds more than two decades of experience to laser cutting in Stainless steel and welded aluminium metalwork. This means that whoever prepares your cut understands metal: they know how the material behaves, anticipate bending and welding problems, and advise the client with expertise.
At Lumiinox you will find: High-tech industrial equipment, high precision and quality of finish, speed in production, specialised technical support and work for companies and individuals, from single pieces to complete series.
We are also a complete partner: we cut, bend, weld and finish, delivering the piece ready for use or installation. For the client, this translates into a single point of contact, a single deadline and a single responsibility for the final quality.
Frequently asked questions
