How much does laser cutting cost? What influences the price

It's one of the questions we receive most often: How much does laser cutting cost? The honest answer is: it depends on a few factors, all easy to identify. There are no magic tables or prices per kilo that work for everything; there is a transparent calculation that any client can understand, and that is worth knowing before requesting the first proposal. This article explains this calculation from the inside, shows how you can reduce the cost of your parts, and describes the fastest way to a rigid budget.

In the end, you will understand why two seemingly similar parts can have different prices, and why the cheapest part is not always the one that costs the least.

The four factors that determine the price

The cost of Laser cutting of sheet metal essentially results from four variables.

1. The material

Stainless steel, aluminium, and other alloys have different raw material costs, and the sheet metal is usually the largest portion of the final price. Within the same metal, the finish also matters: a brushed stainless steel with a protective film costs more than a simple laminate. Specifying the right material in the order, or asking for guidance on alternatives, is the first way to control the cost.

2. Thickness

The thicker the sheet metal, the more power and cutting time per meter. The relationship is not linear: going from 2 to 4 mm costs less than going from 10 to 12. It is worth questioning whether the part really needs the designed thickness; often, a well-placed bend provides more rigidity than an extra millimeter of sheet metal, and our bending addresses this.

3. Design Complexity

The laser takes its toll along the way: more contours, more holes, and more cutouts mean more metres of cutting and more perforations. A decorative panel with five hundred holes costs more than a plain panel with four, even if the sheet is the same. Details that add value should remain; details that no one will see can be simplified.

4. Quantity

In series, the cost per piece drops noticeably. Preparation time is diluted, the fitting of the pieces on the sheet improves material utilization, and the work gains momentum. Ordering ten pieces at once is almost always cheaper than ordering five twice.

In summary: Material + thickness + metres of cut + quantity. These are the four variables that make up the price. Everything else is detail.

How to reduce cost without compromising the piece

There are design decisions that make cutting more economical. Group parts in the same order and the same thickness: cutting everything on the same sheet reduces preparation time and improves utilization. Standardize materials: two different alloys require two sheets, two programs, and two settings. Simplify where detail doesn't add value: tiny radii, invisible decorative cutouts, and unnecessary holes pay for themselves in machine time.

Send a good file: a clean, full-scale DXF with closed contours allows for faster quoting and cutting without adjustments. And Think about the whole package: if the part requires bending, quoting cutting and bending together at Lumiinox is cheaper than combining two suppliers and eliminates transportation between them.

What's included in our price

When you receive a quote from Lumiinox, the price includes file analysis by our team, preparation and scheduling of the cut, the indicated material, cutting on our MAQFORT MCL3015OF with quality check, and proper packaging of the parts. There are no surprises on the invoice: what's in the quote is what you pay.

If the work includes bendingwelding or finishing, each operation is itemized, so you know exactly what you're paying for and can make a clear decision.

How to request a quote in three steps

The process is simple and quick. First, send the technical drawing file in DXF, DWG or PDF format through the form quote request. Second, indicate the material, thickness and quantity of pieces; add the deadline, if critical. Third, receive a personalized quote, with clear prices and deadlines. At Lumiinox, the quote is free, without obligation, and we respond quickly.

No technical drawing? We can help

Many of our clients arrive with just an idea, a measurement or a sketch. Our team develops the technical drawing with you before quoting, with no hidden costs. An old piece to replicate, a photograph with measurements, a hand-drawn sketch: everything serves as a starting point. The important thing is to start the conversation: from there, we take care of the drawing, validate the measurements with you and only cut when everything is confirmed.

Because the cheapest option can be the most expensive

One last note on comparing quotes. The cutting price is only one part of the actual cost of the piece. An imprecise cut pays for itself in hours of adjustment during assembly; a burred edge pays for itself in finishing; a missed deadline pays for itself in stopped work. When comparing proposals, also compare what each one includes: the quality of the equipment, the experience of the team, and the responsibility of the person delivering.

At Lumiinox, the price reflects a complete service: more than two decades of experience in Stainless steel and aluminium metalwork, recent industrial equipment and a team that takes responsibility for what it does. That is the value proposition behind every number.

Examples that help to contextualize

Without revealing tables, which always depend on the steel market and the day, we can describe how the cost behaves. A Simple plate 2 mm stainless steel piece, with four holes, has almost all its cost in the material and preparation: in quantity, the price per piece drops quickly. A Perforated decorative panel reverses the logic: the material costs less than the thousands of perforations, and machine time dominates the price. A Thick piece 12 mm pays mainly for the slow cutting time that the thickness imposes.

Understanding which group your piece falls into helps anticipate the budget and decide where it's worth optimizing: in the material, the design, or the quantity.

When the deadline also comes into play

Our standard production lead time covers most needs. When a client needs an urgent response, we rearrange the planning whenever possible, and clearly state if there is an associated additional cost. The opposite also happens: orders with ample lead time allow us to optimize the fit into production. If time is a factor in your project, state it in the order; it's another variable we like to put on the table from the beginning, without surprises on either side.

Cutting plus bending: a cost that pays off

If your piece involves bending, place a single order. Budgeting Cutting and bending together eliminates transport between suppliers, takes advantage of planning done only once, and gives you a single deadline and a single person responsible. In practice, the sum of the two operations in the same workshop costs less than the two operations purchased separately, and the final quality benefits.

Transparency from start to finish

A good business relationship begins with a clear budget. Therefore, our proposals identify the part, the material and the finish, the quantities and deadlines, and itemize the operations included. If during the work any change requested by the client arises, the impact on the value is communicated before proceeding, never after. We prefer to lose an order than to win an argument, and that's also how you build repeat customers.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a minimum order value?

Small jobs are welcome. Unique pieces and prototypes are part of our daily lives, for companies and individuals.

Is the quote binding?

The proposal indicates values and deadlines with a defined validity. Without changes to the order, the value remains the same.

How long does it take to get a response?

With a complete file and material data, usually very little time: we make a point of responding quickly.

Can I supply my own board?

As a rule, we work with our own material to guarantee quality and traceability, but we evaluate specific cases.

The most common myths about the price of laser

It's worth dispelling three preconceived ideas. “Laser is only for large series”: false; without tooling costs, laser is precisely the most accessible technology for unique pieces and prototypes, because preparing a new job is like uploading a file. “Laser is a luxury compared to the guillotine”: On a simple rectangular piece, the guillotine can compete, but just one hole or cut can change the outcome, because the guillotine requires additional operations that the laser does all at once. “Requesting a quote is a commitment”: At Lumiinox, quotes are free and without obligation; this is precisely so you can compare and decide with numbers in hand.

With the myths dispelled, the reality remains: for the vast majority of sheet metal parts up to 18 mm thick, laser cutting is currently the most rational way to cut, both technically and economically.
