Welded aluminium gates: what's worth comparing

Two welded aluminium gates may look the same in a photo and function very differently at your home's entrance. The width of the leaves, profiles, hardware, and supports weigh as heavily in the choice as the colour. Therefore, it's worth looking at the complete proposal before deciding.

Start with how you will use the gate. An entrance where a car passes morning and night has different needs than access to a business with frequent traffic. This information should be discussed with the workshop right from the first conversation.

The structure deserves as much attention as the design

In a welded gate, the profiles are joined to form the assembly. Rigidity depends on the chosen sections, geometry, joints, and leaf dimensions. Simply stating that a gate is made of aluminium leaves much unclear.

Ask for the quote to identify the material, the type of construction, and the finish. If the entrance is wide, ask how the gate leaf support will be handled. A solution that works on a small gate may require a different structure when it increases in size.

More privacy also changes its behavior in the wind.

Spaced-out slats allow part of the interior to be seen. A more closed infill protects the house but increases the surface area exposed to the wind. In an open entrance to the countryside or near the coast, this difference should be factored into the overall evaluation and the automation.

Bring photos of the site taken from the front and both sides. Show the walls, pillars, and the terrain where the gate will open. The design is easier to get right when you understand the real space, not just the measurement between pillars.

Choosing the opening before the colour

A sliding gate needs lateral space to retract. A swing gate needs a free zone for the movement of the leaves. The slope of the entrance, parking, and pedestrian traffic can make one of these solutions more convenient.

If you want to automate, say so from the beginning. Even if the motor is left for a later stage, the necessary supports and passages can be studied with the gate. This avoids deciding on these details when the piece is already finished.

What should be written in the budget

Compare proposals with the same scope. Confirm if they include measurement, manufacturing, finishing, transport, assembly, and automation. Also clarify who will handle the construction work and the electrical supply, when necessary.

Ask about recommended cleaning procedures and what assistance is planned. The finish should be chosen according to the site conditions. It is also advisable to understand how the contact points between different materials will be treated.

Preparing your order

For an initial analysis, gather the approximate width and height, photographs of the entrance, the desired type of opening, and a reference of the design you like. Add the location of the work and the date you would like the work completed. The final measurements must be confirmed before manufacturing.

Lumiinox manufactures Stainless steel and welded aluminium gates. Can send the photographs and request a quote for your entrance, even if you are still deciding on the design.
